Kunszentmárton is the centre of Tiszazug small region composed of 14 settlements. The population of the region is about 45 thousand.
Beside the tradition of agricultural cultivation the light industry and the building trade are present in the district. In the light industry the furriery, the textile, timber and plastic (foil production) industries are of importance. Besides the smaller farms, the co-operative and the state farms considerable extend of lands concentrated in the hands of private owners. Two thermal springs with above 80 °C can be found in the outskirts of Kunszentmárton. After the political system change the former manufactures fell about (BVM, Pannónia furriery), but several new ones started to produce. The Industrial Park and Logistic Service Centre of Kunszentmárton was granted the status of the industrial parks in 2000. The infrastructures have been completed recently (water, cess-water, gas etc.). The Regional Laystall built in the outskirts of Szelevény solves the problem of the storage of waste in the district. Several investments happened in the last few years which determine the townscape too. The new bus station was built, but the police and the local fire-station also moved to new buildings. The new enlarged building of the prosecution was inaugurated in 2006. The Community and Sport Hall completed in 2006 gives place the town library, and serves not only the culture but the as an excellent scene of sport events too. Several elemental disasters have struck the town and its district recently and the population was sorely tried. The flood of river Körös threatened the town over the centuries, but the flood of April of 2006 surpassed them. In connection with that flood dike strenthening and heightening works were carried out in 2006-2007, which hopefully provide long lasting safety for the people of the town. Several cultural societies act in the town even today (Town Protecting Society, Free Society of Authors, Collectors' Association), among others anglers' association, equestrian and tradition-keeping society, embroidery circle and association and a sport club (KUTE). Apart from the scenic spots Kunszentmárton waits the visitors and its citizens with ample programmes. The summering and the local children's day are traditionally held in May. A returning event of every June is the Strong Men's Festival, and the last weekend of June is the date of Kunszentmárton Brass Bands' Meeting and the Music Festival of Tiszazug, which provide cultural experience of high standard. Connecting to the feast of Saint Stephen in August the 'Dalamáris' Folk Music Festival, the Cultural Show of Tiszazug, and the Tradition Keeping Equestrian Day of Kungyalu are held. In he middle of September, on he day of the town Fish Cooking Contest of Körös and other amusing programmes await the guests. The Saint Martin Days in November commemorate the eponym of the town. Beside the above mentioned the educational and teaching institutions, civil organizations and communities provide numerous programmes all the year round. |
